It Is Finished

This captivating image is an example of a technique known as ICM - Intentional Camera Movement - in which the artist deliberately causes movement during the extended exposure. This image emerged from a session I conducted while photographing some woodland trees. Hardly believing what I saw, It left me speechless and in tears. It is quite literally the hand of God moving through my art. I say that because I had no intentional or deliberate part to play other than making the photograph. The more you look the more you may see. I was breathless to see the depth and meaning far beyond the first glance. The central subject is clearly Jesus while on the cross. A deeper study will reveal the Father’s face over Jesus’s right shoulder with his arm wrapping around. The energy in the swirl speaks of the very moment in time in which the mission was done and the purpose was accomplished. His death began the journey into Hell to remove the keys of death and the grave from Lucifer, and depart leading a massive parade of captives set free. This image was God himself being creative with my hands and camera. I had nothing to do with what emerged. Jesus often said at the end of many of his teachings, “for him who has ears to hear, let him hear”, or for him who has eyes to see, let him see”. Some have viewed this image and come away without seeing what I see. Some have asked me if I photographed a tree stump. I am fascinated with what people see in this image. What do you see?

*ICM - “Intentional Camera Movement” - is a photographic technique exceeding difficult to master. The camera is moved with intention during a long shutter exposure creating deliberate blur. Various types of movement, with varying degrees of intensity, executed on a scene with appropriate contrast of color or luminance. For all of my work, I only print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic paper, one of the most exquisite and expensive in the world. The metallic particles embedded in the coating of the paper, along with it’s remarkable yet subtle texture, gives the print a shimmering dimensionality that is almost magical.
